Rooted in the vibrant dialect of the Doric tongue — spoken across Aberdeenshire, Banff, Buchan, and beyond — this page celebrates the stories, sayings, and recipes, history, and everyday moments that make life in the North East so unique.

We’re the home of books like Doric for Abidy and Doric for Abidy Twa, with their hand-drawn humor and heartfelt language — and now we’re cookin’ up The Doric Kitchen, a new series bringin’ traditional food and phrases straight frae the pot tae yer screen.

Our mission is simple: preserve and share the Doric language and culture through stories, recipes, laughter, and local voices. Whether ye grew up wi’ a granny who said “Fit like?” or you’re just discoverin’ the charm o’ Doric, this channel’s for abidy.

About The Author

Brian Peter Innes

Brian Innes grew up in the heart of Kemnay, where the rhythms of village life and the richness of the Doric tongue shaped his earliest memories. Before pursuing higher education at The University of Aberdeen and Teacher Training College, he was a grocer’s loon, a baker’s vanman, a postie, and a pinter — all trades that kept him close to the folk and the language he cherishes.

Brian spent over 23 years teaching at Inverurie Academy and later in Chesapeake, Virginia, sharing his passion for learning and storytelling across two continents. Now semi-retired, “selling hooses an grun noo and again, and files writing and traveling,” he has turned his heart back toward home.

As the author of Doric for Abidy and Doric for Abidy Twa, and the creator of Doric Diaries and The Doric Kitchen, Brian is proud to celebrate, preserve, and pass on the unique culture, humor, and heritage of Northeast Scotland. Through his books, stories, and shows, he invites a new generation to spik it, share it, and keep it alive.
